The Brechtfast Club

A collision of pop culture, historical materialism, and the alienation effect.

Brechtian adaptation / political satire

First Presented:

2023

Short Description

A collision of pop culture, historical materialism, and the alienation effect.

About the Work

The Brechtfast Club is a theatrical adaptation of The Breakfast Club in the style of Bertolt Brecht.

The work takes a film about adolescent individualism, almost entirely sealed inside a high school classroom, and places it inside a Brechtian structure of episodes, interruptions, songs, direct address, and political contradiction.

Set against the late Cold War and the absurd machinery of surveillance, the piece stages American individualism and collectivist state ideology beside one another without resolving the contradiction.
